SPACE10 is a research and innovation company aiming to create a more harmonious relationship between people and our planet. We collaborated on a speculative design project titled Carbon Banks, designing and producing visuals to illustrate key research findings.
Carbon Banks investigates how people treat everyday objects, and whether they may be incentivised to have a more sustainable relationship with their furniture - through NFTs.
We were tasked to create the visuals that accompanied a dedicated microsite, all of which was based on an extensive white paper by WINT. A 90 second film translated the white paper into a visual narrative, with an integral part of the process being the proposed design system for the NFT tree itself.
The film focuses on the 'NFTree', which is bound to a chair that stays in the users home for 15 years. To mark its age milestones and repair efforts, new 'traits' grow from the tree over time.
We landed on a ‘grafted’ look with a mix of species that had some kind of symbolic association with the values and processes associated with the concept. There’s a branch with oak leaves, a nod to the oak veneer of the FRÖSET chair used in the film. Pine needles were digitally pruned to resemble bonsai arrangements, a practice of care and patience. And the ferns that unfurl after the repair of the leg are based on the ‘resurrection fern’, which felt appropriate.
